The EGR valve is a line formed between the vehicle’s exhaust system and the intake manifold, that is, between the combustion chamber, and opens in the middle and closes it when necessary. This is where the name of the valve comes from. EGR means exhaust gas recycling system. It is found in gasoline and non-gasoline cars. It is known as exhaust gas recirculation and its abbreviation is known as EGR. The purpose of EGR is to minimize the Nitrogen Oxide gas released as a result of the combustion process during engine operation.

How does the EGR system work in vehicles?

After the exhaust gas burns in the combustion chamber, that is, during combustion, it reaches a temperature of up to 1400-1500 degrees. When it reaches this temperature, it causes the emergence of nitrogen gases. As you know, nitrogen gases are very harmful to the environment and human health. If some of the exhaust gas is returned to the combustion chamber, the performance of this combustion chamber will increase. In other words, it cuts off some of the oxygen in the fresh air and replaces it with burnt gas, thus reducing the combustion performance slightly. When the temperature drops automatically, this temperature drops to around 1000 degrees. While initially pneumatic valves working with the help of air were used, electronic valves are now used in vehicles, that is, there is a small motor on it and it opens and closes the valve. There is also a small cooler on it, it works with the help of engine cooling water, it reduces the temperature of the gas coming out of the exhaust a little, that is, even if it is 900 degrees on average, it can reduce it to 200 degrees. degrees and sends it to the combustion chamber in this way

Does EGR save fuel?

There are those who think that they save fuel this time by re-burning the gases that are not burned enough in the exhaust system through EGR. I frankly disagree with this, so it is good. After all, how much more can you burn the burnt gas? If the system is said to be effective in reducing nitrogen gases by 30%, that is, according to research, it reduces nitrogen gases by up to 30%. But does it work like that in practice? Of course, it doesn’t work perfectly. Now, especially in Diesel vehicles, the sulfur content is higher in Diesel. Since the sulfur content is higher in diesel, more soot is produced in gasoline than in vehicles. It is also present in gasoline vehicles, but it is a little more troublesome in diesels. Now the gas has come out of the combustion chamber. The soot is already sent to the combustion chamber through the EGR valve. EGR has working conditions, for example, you need normal power, you are on a ramp or you are going at full throttle, the underground does not come into play, it stays off, it does not cut the engine performance required at that time, when you are driving normally and stable, you fix it for your ceremony or you go in the city without applying too much power, then it is activated. It then decreases the combustion performance slightly.

When is EGR active?

As long as the car is running at high speeds while moving, the EGR valve becomes active after the engine temperature increases as the speed increases.
